Non-comedogenic make-up

What exactly is non-comedogenic make-up?

One comedo, many comedones: though these may sound like galactic special forces, they are actually just terms for blackheads. Ingredients are described as “comedogenic” if they are thought to block pores and promote blackheads. All other ingredients are “non-comedogenic”. But let’s take a closer look...

What are common comedogenic ingredients?

First of all, we’re not talking about “good” or “bad” ingredients here. We’re talking about which ingredients are suitable for blemished skin and which are not. The same ingredients that nourish and protect dry skin can clog the pores of blemished skin and lead to blackheads or spots. These substances are labelled as “comedogenic” – a category that tends to include all oils, waxes and fats. But the reality is a little more complicated.

Comedogenic, non-comedogenic, or something in between.

Deciding which ingredients you should avoid or select for blemished skin is not so easy – even if long lists suggest the opposite. Certain oils, which are generally considered comedogenic and can help blemishes faster. So really, they should be listed as non-comedogenic. On the other hand, some substances that are categorised as non-comedogenic can be controversial, such as mineral oils or paraffins, silicones and PEGs.

Is it a good idea to choose non-comedogenic make-up?

Non-comedogenic products are a good choice for blemished skin, combination skin and sensitive skin – especially when it comes to make-up that should cover spots but not irritate the skin or clog the pores. After all, the aim is to improve the appearance of your skin over the long term. However, the label "non-comedogenic make-up" serves as nothing more than a starting point, as the term has no official definition.

How can I find non-comedogenic make-up that is right for my skin?

One important step (which you are clearly already taking) is getting to grips with ingredients. Opt for lightweight formulations such as a liquid foundation with light to medium coverage rather than a solid, high-coverage product. But most importantly: try the make-up out. Everyone’s skin reacts differently to both comedogenic and non-comedogenic ingredients. Your skin’s response to a product tells you more than any label can.

Make-up tips if you are prone to blemishes.

The right choice of Foundation, concealer or powder is far from everything. The following tips are tried-and-tested for improving the appearance of blemished skin.

Tip 1: Always remove your make-up

Proper facial cleansing is crucial. Even if it’s late, always make sure to remove make-up and cleanse your face gently and thoroughly so that your skin can breathe overnight. This is a good idea in general – but even more important for blemished skin.

Tip 2: Take a clean approach

Don’t squeeze spots, make sure to change your face towel often, and only use clean, disinfected make-up brushes. Do not apply cosmetic products to open sores.

Tip 3: Take time for you and your skin

A Clarifying Steam Bath followed by a Clarifying Clay Mask not only treats your skin to a deep cleanse – it also treats you to some deep relaxation. Here at Dr. Hauschka, we are also happy to recommend a special treatment by one of our highly trained Dr. Hauschka estheticians.

Non-comedogenic Make-up Dr. Hauschka-style: make-up that understands blemished skin.

You won’t find the label “non-comedogenic” on our products. Some of the ingredients we use – such as beeswax or vegetable oils – are considered comedogenic. But just how comedogenic they are always depends on their concentration. In our products, this is clearly not an issue. That is because we focus on the overall composition – which includes extracts from plants such as anthyllis and marigold. Our make-up helps your skin rediscover its healthy balance.

Dr. Hauschka’s make-up products are suitable for use with blemished skin, combination skin and sensitive skin.
